What is DSL?

Digital Subscriber Line service allows a high-speed Internet connection across ordinary phone lines. This technology allows the user to talk on the phone, and be online simultaneously. Dialing is not necessary to make an Internet connection: the connection is always present. When you turn on your computer, DSL is on.

How fast is DSL?

Speeds up to 3.0 Mbps can be reached with RTELCO's Lightning Fast DSL.

Do I need an extra phone line for DSL to work?

No. DSL will work on an existing phone line.

Can I talk on the phone while I'm online?

Yes. DSL allows transmission of data and voice simultaneously.

Will being on the telephone decrease my bandwidth?

No. Data and voice are transmitted at different frequencies. The voice frequency is so low it will not interfere with the DSL bandwidth.

What is personal web space?

Personal web space is a 12 megabyte storage area that allows you to publish web content.  If you have a valid Randolph TMC Internet account, this space is available for you to use.  You can create your own web pages and publish them to your personal web space.

How do I publish web content to my personal web space?

All web content must be placed in a folder named public_html.  To access this folder, click on the link below.  Once you have successfully logged in, you will see the public_html folder.  If you have created a home page, it is recommended that you name it index.html.  This will cause your home page to load automatically when someone browses to your web site.

How do I browse to my personal web space?

In order to see your published web content, you will need to browse to your personal web space.  To do this, type the following into your browsers address bar: www.rtelco.net/~username - where username is your Internet account user name.  The user name must be lower case with no spaces.  If you have published a file named index.html to your personal web space, it will be displayed automatically.  Others can visit your web site in the same manner.

What do I need to use Video Email?

Make sure you already have a microphone (for audio messages) and/or a compatible video camera (for video messages) installed on your computer. A list of compatible cameras is located at the end of this document. Many computers already have built-in microphones. Please be sure to check the lighting in your area when composing a message. It is important to be in a well lit area for the best results. Recording audio or video messages is easy with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Make sure that you have only one browser window open to minimize the confusion with the recorder. Also make sure that you are not running the CD player, an MP3 player, or other audio or video software before starting the Video email recorder. The recording page will automatically detect if you have a microphone or a video camera. If you have only a microphone (most PCs today have built-in mics), the recording page will state "Recording Audio Only", and you can record an audio message. If you have a video camera that is compatible with the service, you can record a video message.

*Video Email must be activated on your account. Please contact customer service at 336-622-7900 for assistance.
