What is DSL?

Digital Subscriber Line service allows a high-speed Internet connection across ordinary phone lines. This technology allows the user to talk on the phone, and be online simultaneously. Dialing is not necessary to make an Internet connection: the connection is always present. When you turn on your computer, DSL is on.

What is a network interface card (NIC) and where do I get one?

A Network Interface Card enables your computer to transmit and receive high-speed data. Network interface cards can be purchased at most office supply and electronic stores (Staples, BestBuy). There are many manufacturers of network interface cards, such as 3Com, Netgear, and Linksys. Network interface cards are also referred to as 10/100 ethernet adapters.

What is personal web space?

Personal web space is a 12 megabyte storage area that allows you to publish web content.  If you have a valid Randolph TMC Internet account, this space is available for you to use.  You can create your own web pages and publish them to your personal web space.

How do I publish web content to my personal web space?

All web content must be placed in a folder named public_html.  To access this folder, click on the link below.  Once you have successfully logged in, you will see the public_html folder.  If you have created a home page, it is recommended that you name it index.html.  This will cause your home page to load automatically when someone browses to your web site.

How do I browse to my personal web space?

In order to see your published web content, you will need to browse to your personal web space.  To do this, type the following into your browsers address bar: www.rtmc.net/~username - where username is your Internet account user name.  The user name must be lower case with no spaces.  If you have published a file named index.html to your personal web space, it will be displayed automatically.  Others can visit your web site in the same manner.
